Tigers quarterback Max Johnson’s preseason profile

With the 2021 college football season camp just days away, LSU Tigers Wire looks to preview the impact players ahead of the season.

We are about to find out if the Tigers do indeed have two championship-caliber quarterbacks. Max Johnson is heading into the season as the starting quarterback for Jake Peetz after another blow to the depth chart. Last year Johnson played in six games with two starts by the season’s end. No. 14 is looking for a huge sophomore season. The son of former Florida State Seminole and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Brad Johnson has the pedigree to play in this league.

Depth Chart Overview

Last season Max Johnson found his way onto the field in six games but he wouldn’t start until the final two games of the season. LSU won both of his starts against Florida and Ole Miss. Ed Orgeron has said on multiple occasions that we have only one quarterback that is 2-0. As far as the depth chart is concerned, Johnson is the only quarterback on the roster who has thrown a pass at the NCAA level.

Last season it was an abdominal injury to Myles Brennan that forced the coach’s hand to put Johnson on the field. This year it was Brennan’s broken humerus bone that is handing him the starting role. He could have won the job in camp but that is all over now. Johnson is QB1 until Brennan can return if he even does this year. It is likely that the southpaw would be the starter regardless. A freshman in Garrett Nussmeier will serve as the backup.
