The Edmonton Oilers signed defenseman Darnell Nurse to an eight-year contract extension with an average annual value of $9.25 million, the team announced Friday. He was entering the final year of his contract, in which he was due $5.6 million.
Nurse boasted a career-high 16 goals, as well as 20 assists, in just over 25 minutes of ice time per game for the Oilers this past season. His .286 goals per game average ranked fourth on the team behind Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
Drafted with the No. 7 pick in the 2013 draft by the Oilers, Nurse has played his entire seven-year NHL career in Edmonton and has tallied 45 goals and 112 assists (157 points) over that time.
The Oilers were swept by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round of the 2021 playoffs, with Game 4 ending in a devastating third-overtime loss.
