Messi playing for Barcelona at start of season looks unlikely. The club have some tough decisions ahead – The Athletic

Monday was billed as a momentous day at Barcelona — with the arrival back in Catalonia of the players who had represented their countries at the summer’s Copa America.

There was a big deal made as new Brazilian right-back Emerson signed his contract until 2024 and gave his first press conference as a Barcelona player alongside club president Joan Laporta.

Argentina international Sergio Aguero was also at the training ground as he gets ready to wear a Barcelona shirt in action for the first time in the away friendly against Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg tonight (Wednesday) after his free-agent move from Manchester City. There was also a first sighting of Philippe Coutinho at the complex in over six months as he continues the final stages of his recovery from December’s knee injury.

There was one big absence though — a huge one that really should have been the only thing anybody was talking about.

What should be the biggest football story of the summer (sorry, Harry!) has somehow gone underground, with a broad assumption around that it has already been resolved, or will surely be officially sorted soon. But as the days tick by, and no real progress is made regarding Barcelona’s financial issues, that assumption looks more and more likely to make an ass out of you and me.
