Leicester City will move into the transfer market to sign a centre back after Wesley Fofana suffered a horrendous leg injury in the pre-season friendly win over Villarreal at King Power Stadium.
Leicester were 3-0 up and looking impressive, with the 20-year-old forging a strong partnership with Caglar Soyuncu, when he was caught by a strong tackle from Fernando Nino with the second half only a few minutes old.
Nino won the ball but his trailing leg — as his momentum carried him through the challenge — connected with Fofana’s lower left leg, which was left horribly distorted. His team-mates were visibly shocked as the Frenchman was treated for several minutes on the pitch before being stretchered off, needing oxygen as he was moved, and taken to hospital. Fofana confirmed on Twitter that he had fractured the fibula in his leg but was awaiting the full diagnosis.
Nino was only shown a yellow card by referee Matt Donahue and went on to pull a goal back for the Spanish side before being booed by the 17,371 crowd as he was substituted shortly afterwards.
“He is an unbelievable player,” team-mate Ryan Bertrand said of Fofana afterwards. “I have been fortunate to play with some decent centre-backs in my time and the centre-backs we have here are right up there as well.
“Wes, for such a young age, shows fantastic promise but it is so unfortunate. We will have to see what the diagnosis is and I am sure he will come back stronger.
