Big 12 Freshman of the Year Tyrese Hunter transfers to Texas

Texas head coach Chris Beard just struck again in the transfer portal.

Tyrese Hunter, last season’s Big 12 Freshman of the Year, announced Friday he is transferring from Iowa State to the Longhorns.

Hunter was widely considered one of the nation’s top available transfers this offseason alongside ex-SMU guard Kendric Davis (who headed to Memphis).

Hunter averaged 11.0 points per game for the Cyclones and a team-high 4.9 assists and 2.0 steals per game. He was also considered one of the best perimeter defenders in the Big 12.

At Texas, Hunter should step into Beard’s starting lineup immediately.

The Longhorns went 22-12 (10-8, Big 12) last year, and were a 6-seed in the NCAA Tournament. Texas lost to 3-seed Purdue in the second round.
