Baseball Is Trying to Get More Exciting—But Hitting Is Near Historic Lows

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred has often said he wants to return the style of play to something more closely resembling what many fans remember from their youth. That means cutting down on the home runs and strikeouts that currently dominate the sport in favor of a game with more action on the field.

Baseball has gotten that half right so far this year—but not the results Manfred is hoping for. Home runs are down. Strikeouts are still soaring. And it’s producing one of the weakest offensive seasons in years.
