The Vols snuck past No. 13 seed Louisiana in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament 2023 and were underdogs in their second-round meeting with Duke. They controlled the second half in their 65-52 win over the Blue Devils, as senior forward Olivier Nkamhoua scored 27 points on 10-of -13 shooting.
The Vols lost starting point guard Zakai Zeigler to a season-ending knee injury at the end of the regular season, but their elite defense has carried them through the 2023 NCAA bracket. The Wildcats have gotten this far, in part, due to cold outside shooting from their opponents as Montana State and Kentucky shot a combined 25% on 3-pointers against K-State. But Michigan State ranks eighth nationally at 39% from beyond the arc, and the Spartans’ defense can also take advantage of a KSU offense that turns the ball over 14.1 times per game.
With Tom Izzo, the Spartans have a big advantage in coaching as Izzo has a 10-4 record in the Sweet 16. First-year head coach Jerome Tang of Kansas State has yet to coach in a game of this magnitude.
